According to AccountingWeb, almost half of accountants feel bored at work. In fact, this work has even caused 54.9% of respondents to look for another job. So what steps can you take to relieve the tedium?

No paper, no problem

The main reasons for feeling dissatisfied were tedious daily tasks (40% and repetitious tasks (24%). If your firm is still collecting paper receipts and invoices from your clients, and entering the data manually, it's not hard to see why.

A quick Google search will tell you a similar story, from these disgruntled accountants on Reddit, to this Xero client, everyone hates data entry. Luckily, it's never been easier to take that work off your hands, and focus on something more interesting.

Receipt Bank Partner Digit Books, in Australia, used to spend 60% of their time per client just on data entry. When they implemented Receipt Bank they cut their bookkeeping time in half.

A richer use of time

Keeping talented staff is a challenge many industries face, but few of them offer such a clear choice. You can stick with a tedious, manual process that encourages your team to spend their lunch breaks browsing other jobs, or you can automate your data collection and entry and give them something more interesting and more profitable, to do.

Receipt Bank Partner Mike Melling, who runs a group of successful Tax Assist practices, described the positive effect that technology has had on retaining the right staff.

“One of the accounting trends that the industry faces is finding good people, including skilled, qualified bookkeepers. It’s a customer facing business, so you need people who can build relationships with clients, whether that’s face-to-face or on the phone. Automating the manual work means you can move staff with energy and passion up the chain and have them interpreting the numbers and helping the clients, instead of chasing them.”

As Mike mentions above, your staff are looking to do work that makes a difference to clients, and they want to learn. This means offering real training and development opportunities for ambitious staff.

Receipt Bank makes it easy to automate your data collection and data entry and give them something more interesting to do. Make sure you do it before it's too late. Find out more at our weekly webinar here.
